Vaccination of A/L students to commence in Colombo on Friday

Vaccination of Advanced Level students will commence in Colombo District on Friday, before taking place across the island next week.

According to Education Ministry Additional Secretary L.M.D. Dharmasena, the vaccination program will target students who sat for the Advanced Level exam once or are taking the exam for the first time.

“Children born between 16 October 2001 and 15 October 2003 belong to this group,” Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena said, adding that children can get vaccinated in schools as well as MOH offices and base teaching and general hospitals.

“Before commencing the program next week, vaccination will begin in all zones in Colombo District on 15 October,” Dharmasena said, adding that the education zones in Colombo District include Homagama, Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, and Piliyandala.

He added that students are advised to inquire about their vaccination centre from the school principal and have with them their National Identity Card when visiting the centre.

According to Our World in Data, the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 68.46% of the population, while 58.06% of the country’s total population has received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 85.9% of the country’s population over the age of 20 has received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

In total, the first dose of a vaccine has been administered to 14,731,502 persons and the second dose to 12,553,819 persons.

The Epidemiology Unit states that COVID-19 vaccines were administered to 84,220 persons on Tuesday.

This includes 12,465 persons who received the first dose of Sinopharm and 48,989 persons who received the second dose of Sinopharm. The Epidemiology Unit states that the first dose of Sinopharm has been administered to 11,813,318 persons, of which 9,888,716 persons have received the second dose as well.

The first dose of AstraZeneca has been administered to 1,479,565 persons and 1,323,154 persons have received the second dose of the vaccine. On Tuesday, 9,519 persons received the second dose of AstraZeneca.

The first dose of Pfizer was administered to 1,010 persons on Tuesday and 12,020 persons received the second dose of the vaccine on Tuesday. In total, the first dose of Pfizer has been administered to 476,470 persons and the second dose to 424,415 persons.

A total of 803,053 persons have received the first dose of Moderna and 761,942 persons have received the second dose. On Tuesday, 217 persons received the second dose of Moderna.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 159,096 persons have received the first dose of Sputnik V and 155,592 persons have received the second dose of the vaccine.
