The United National Party in a statement yesterday said that it was committed to uphold the people’s right to hold elections and ensure the right to democracy.
“We are ready to take action against anyone who seeks to defeat the people’s right to democracy and elections,” the statement said.
Stating that the party has worked to establish an environment conducive to hold local government elections, the statement said the UNP would defeat any force working against the right to the franchise of the people.
It was the responsibility of all who uphold the people’s right to franchise and democracy to rally against any force which tries to prevent local government elections from being held on time. The UNP was ready to take the lead and join hands with all democratic organisations to defeat any force which tries to obstruct elections being held on time, the statement said.
