UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam
The United National Party (UNP) yesterday complained to the Election Commission (EC) regarding the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) using the colour ‘green’ for their election campaign, calling on the commission to ban the SJB from using it.
In a letter, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam pointed out that the UNP’s colours are green according to its constitution, while the SJB have blue as a party colour in their constitution. “Them using ‘green’ for their election campaign instead of blue is clearly a deliberate attempt by the SJB to mislead UNP supporters,” Kariyawasam charged.
Kariyawasam complained that the continued use of the official colour of the UNP by the SJB for campaigning was causing significant confusion among voters and was negatively impacting the UNP.
He had requested the EC to intervene and take the necessary steps to prevent the SJB from using the UNP’s ‘official’ colour.
