UNP calls on EC to announce final decision on Parliamentary Polls

United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has requested the Election Commission to announce its decision on the date of the upcoming Parliamentary Polls.

Speaking at a meeting Kariyawasam claimed that the Election Commission had called political parties for meetings on three separate occasions to discuss on the upcoming General Election with no final decision being made on the date.

He said that the Government had previously predicted that by 19 April the COVID-19 outbreak would be under control but that period saw the highest number of reported cases.

Kariyawasam requested the Election Commission to enforce its authority and, in consultation with the Health Ministry, make a decision regarding the General Election that would not endanger the lives of the citizens of Sri Lanka.
