Chennai Police yesterday arrested two suspects wanted by Sri Lanka on organised crime and murder charges following local authorities issuing red notices for them via INTERPOL, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Retd.) Sarath Weerasekara said.
According to Minister Weerasekara, the two suspects Sinnaiah Gunasekera alias ‘Kibula ela Gona’, suspected to be involved in narcotics trafficking and wanted in connection to several murders, as well as Stanley Kishan Fernando alias ‘Bumma’, who is suspected of being a gunman for hire were arrested by Indian Police.
A third person, believed to be a relative of Gunasekera, has also been detained by Indian authorities.
The Minister of Public Security thanked Indian law enforcement and intelligence agencies for their efforts in detaining some of Sri Lanka’s most wanted criminals and stressed that local law enforcement agencies and the State Intelligence Service work closely on crime fighting and security related matters. Weerasekara said that Sri Lanka will begin the process to extradite the suspects soon.
