The security guard and the driver of a vehicle transporting Rs. 20 million in cash to replenish an ATM have been arrested over its robbery at Bulathsinhala on Saturday.
Bulathsinhala police say that a gang of robbers had stolen the money while the money was being transported in a vehicle belonging to a private company in Narahenpita.
Reportedly, the team from the private company, who were preparing to replenish cash at the ATM, had stopped the vehicle at a restaurant for tea and the gang of robbers who had arrived there had sprayed them with chili powder.
Subsequently, the robbers had broken into the vehicle and taken the money before fleeing. It is reported that the security guard had left his personal firearm in the van when he went to the canteen.
The police have arrested the security officer and the driver for abetting the robbers.
