Three top members of the National Freedom Front led by Wimal Weerawansa yesterday joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), indicating signs of a shift in the political tide in the lead-up to the local government elections next year.
Deputy leader of the party Weerakumara Dissanayake, National Organiser Piyasiri Wijeynayake and its North Central Provincial Council member P.B. Kumara joined the SLFP. President Maithripala Sirisena handed them their membership letters at a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat.
The three new SLFP members pledged their support to the program carried out by the President to develop the country and promised their support to the SLFP for the forthcoming elections. The NFF is a constituent party of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna formed by members of the Joint Opposition which has indicated that it will contest the local government elections independent of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
