The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases identified in the island rose to 3,373 yesterday, with ten persons testing positive for the virus.
All persons were overseas arrivals, as were the three COVID-19 cases identified on Monday. A total of 1,379 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 70 foreigners have tested positive to date. The Epidemiology Unit states that the local cases include 950 Navy personnel and their close contacts, and 651 persons connected to the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.
The Epidemiology Unit adds that 20 persons were discharged from various hospitals during the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. yesterday, having recovered from COVID-19. This includes eight persons from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), six persons from the Hambantota District General Hospital, four persons from the Welikanda Base Hospital, and two persons from the Iranawila Hospital.
The total number of COVID-19 recoveries has thus risen to 3,230, and 13 COVID-19-related deaths have been recorded in the island.
The number of active cases dropped from 137 at 10 a.m. on Monday to 130 yesterday. According to the Epidemiology Unit, 45 persons at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 35 persons at the NIID, and 21 persons at the Hambantota District General Hospital are currently receiving treatment for COVID-19.
Hospitals are also monitoring 46 persons suspected of having the virus.
In addition to this, the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of the COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) stated 297 persons left quarantine centres yesterday. This brings the total number of persons to leave centres in the island to 46,330.
The NOCPCO added that 6,882 persons are currently undergoing quarantine at 75 centres managed by the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and the Sri Lanka Air Force. This includes 73 arrivals from Qatar and 24 arrivals from Abu Dhabi.
