Ten people were killed and two others were injured when a van they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus, on the Badulla-Mahiyanganaya road near the Mahiyanganaya Maha Vidyalaya in the pre-dawn hours of yesterday.
The Police said a van carrying 12 people collided head-on with a bus that was traveling from Diyathalawa to Trincomalee, on the Mahiyanganaya-Badulla Main Road around 1:30 a.m. yesterday.
Twelve people were traveling in the van at the time of the accident, and ten of them died after admission to the hospital. The other two injured passengers are also in serious condition, Police said. Seven adults and three children died in the accident. The bodies of the deceased have been placed at the Mahiyanganaya hospital.
The Police suspect that the driver of the van may have fallen asleep and swerved into the wrong lane.
