Sirisena is SLFP candidate for 2020 presidential election: Amaraweera

United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary and Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated that the Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) candidate for the next Presidential Election in 2020 will definitely be current President Maithripala Sirisena.

He made this statement speaking to the media after a party meeting at Hulandawa Junction in Monaragala.

The Minister said that even if the President personally does not agree, they will convince him, as the Party leader, to agree with the Party’s decision to field him as the Presidential candidate from the Party.

He said that there is no other candidate who is honest and has earned the trust of the people locally as well as internationally.

When asked about the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, led by the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister Amaraweera said they believe the joint opposition party will join the SLFP in the future, and that the SLFP is also trying to bring them to the party.

“As the other parties are divided now, we are taking measures to strengthen the party. We are doing our work well,” he said.
