Accordingly, nomination lists for five districts including Hambantota, Ratnapura, Puttalam, Matale and Ampara were signed yesterday while the party is expected to finalise the lists for the remaining districts during this week.

The SLPP kicked off its preparations for the local Government elections of 2023 by placing election deposits for the Kalutara district last week. The party called for applications from aspiring candidates as early as the first week of December 2022. The SLPP at the time said in addition to SLPPers currently serving in local Government bodies, the party hopes to give priority to new candidates, youth, social leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs and that the qualifications of the candidates will be analysed to match the modern political culture in accordance with the current political situation. The vote expected to be held in March will see the election of 8327 members for 24 municipal councils, 41 urban councils and 276 pradeshiya sabhas. The term of office of the local Government bodies is scheduled to end on 20 March 2023.
