Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena yesterday said that a report listing the names of those connected to the Central Bank bond scam would be released within the next few days.
“Once the names are released we can see who was really involved in this scam which caused millions of rupees worth of losses to the Sri Lankan economy,” Abeywardena told the Daily FT.
He said the names would rob the UNP of its credibility, adding that UNP supporters who were protesting around the county would change their minds after the people linked to the bond scam were revealed.
“The report on the Central Bank bond scam will be presented in court within the next 10 days. The Judiciary will decide future action over the scam,” he added.
He added that the bond scam was the reason that President Maithripala Sirisena had to declare that he would never in his lifetime reappoint Ranil Wickremasinghe Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, SLPP MP Dullas Alahapperuma said that President Sirisena had instructed the relevant authorities to publish the Sinhala and Tamil translations of the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the Central Bank bond scam within the next few weeks.
He noted that the debate on the Central Bank bond scam could not be conducted in Parliament due to the unavailability of Sinhala and Tamil translations of the report.
“When the debate was about to commence, MP Sumanthiran protested, noting that debate could not be held without Tamil translations but the Sinhala and Tamil translations were not completed yet.”
Alahapperuma also said that once the translations were completed the debate could commenced in the House.
