A group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party organisers yesterday called on their Party Leader President Maithripala Sirisena to break any alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), warning such a move will be the downfall of their party. Critical of their leader’s actions and decisions since 26 October, G.H. Buddhadasa said that President’s actions violating the Constitution signals a bad omen to the Party, which now risks being ‘swallowed’ by the SLPP if an alliance is formed.
“The Supreme Court led by the Chief Justice has said that the President has violated the constitution, and now he is caught. This is a bad omen,” he said.
Speaking against the decisions taken by their Party, six SLFP organisers, including Rajika Kodithuwakku (Kesbewa main organiser) G H Buddhadasa (Kaduwela District organiser), M Amjad (Beruwala District organiser), Bandara Athukorala (Kegalle District organiser), Nimanthi Peiris (Horana District organiser) and Thushara Ranga (Maharagama District organiser) claimed that they have formed an association called “Nidahas Pakarshaya Surekkeeme Sanwidanaya” (Alliance to Protect the Sri Lanka Freedom Party).
Buddhadasa claimed that there are 18 MPs who are also opposed to forming any alliance with the SLPP who are ready to speak out within the next few days.
Speaking at the briefing, Kodithuwakku noted that former Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray was also part of the breakaway group.
“President should have principles and take a decision,” he said, calling on his Party Leader to not move away from the vision of 2015.
Critical of the decision, Beruwala District organiser M M Amjad claimed that decisions taken at the Central Committee were never implemented. Amjad also claimed that the decision to leave the National Government was never discussed with the Central Committee.
