The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Central Working Committee will be convening today to discuss the party’s goals and objectives for the upcoming general elections, with special focus on steps to be taken to gain a 2/3 majority in Parliament.
“Preparations for the elections are underway,” SLFP spokesperson and Parliamentarian Weerakumara Dissanayake said yesterday.
He said that the Party was hoping to convene boards for all seats and districts as well as hold youth and women’s conferences. “We will be focusing on strengthening the presidential mandate,” Dissanayake went on to say, explaining that this was important to ensure the President does not face any challenges and limitations when making decisions.
He also spoke about the disciplinary action that will be taken against A.H.M. Fowzie, S.B. Dissanayake, Dilan Perera, Wijith Wijayamuni Silva, and Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, as well as various Pradeshiya Sabha members. “Of over 25 Pradeshiya Sabha members, disciplinary action has been taken against 10,” he said, adding that delays in taking action was mainly due to the democratic process followed by the disciplinary committee which is akin to a court of law.
