Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday (05 February) filed a Writ Petition in the Supreme Court seeking to quash the nomination papers of the Janasetha Peramuna and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna for the impeding local government elections in the Attanagalle Pradeshiya Sabha.
SLFP Secretary-General Duminda Dissanayake and two others filed the petition citing the Elections Commission, Returning Officer, candidates contesting from Janasetha and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and others as Respondents.
They state that the 5th Respondent KH Lakmal Dayaratne has been actively involved in Attanagalle in both political parties with the connivance of the political leadership of Janasetha Peramuna and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, thus his conduct and their parties deceived the Elections Commission and the public.
They complain the 5th Respondent has acted in a fraudulent manner in gross violation of the local government elections. They maintain as a result of which he is disqualified ab initio and lists submitted by both parties are invalid. They also contend that in the circumstance, the nomination lists of both parties do not have the total required number of candidates, and therefore the said nomination papers are illegal and/or deemed null and void.
