  • Says Govt. can use protests to learn of its own shortcomings to rectify them and govern better
  • Asserts JO should not criticise SLFP for forming govt. with UNP as SLPP has united with UNP to form LG Councils

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Youth Front yesterday said that they welcomed opposition protests and that the Joint Opposition should carry out at least one protest a month.

“We have no problem with the Joint Opposition’s ‘Janabalaya Colombata’ protest. We welcome it. The Opposition should be protesting at least once a month,” Sri Lanka Freedom Party Youth Front Chairman Shantha Bandara said while addressing a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters yesterday.

Bandara said that the Government could use protests by the Opposition to identify its own shortcomings.

“This is first protest by the Joint Opposition since the Nugegoda rally in January this year. They should be protesting more. It is a fundamental right. In addition, when the Opposition protests it is easier for the Government to find out its faults and rectify them,” he said.

Furthermore, the SLFP Youth Front Chairman said that it was hypocritical of the Joint Opposition to criticise the SLFP for joining the UNP to form a government as the Joint Opposition had made similar moves. “The Joint Opposition condemns the SLFP constantly for joining forces with the UNP to form the Yahapalanaya Government but they are doing the same thing in the Local Government Council. In the Ratnapura main council the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna councillors joined the UNP to establish a Local Government Council. This happened in several other locations including the Medirigiriya Council,” he charged.
