SL and Japan discuss possible security agreement

Both sides also consider integrated plan for development projects funded by India and Japan

Japan has assured assistance to Sri Lanka to fight global terror, improve economic cooperation and discuss signing a security agreement, the Prime Minister’s Office said yesterday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Toshiko Abe held talks at Temple Trees on Wednesday, to discuss ways to better counter global terrorism. During the discussion, a security agreement was seen as an effective option for the two governments to share intelligence.

The statement also said Wickremesinghe expressed gratitude to Abe on the Japanese Government’s continued assistance to Sri Lanka, and gave details of the counterterrorism cooperation between India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, suggested by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two also exchanged views of having an integrated plan on development work, including road development and other projects, carried out by India and Japan in Sri Lanka.
