The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) on Thursday (08) will launch a report “Empowering women in the Informal Sector: A Human Rights Agenda” to mark the International Women’s Day 2018.
Over the past two years, HRCSL has focused on the lived realities, both challenges and triumphs, of women working in the informal sector, particularly in non-urban areas, with a view to addressing within a human rights framework discriminatory issues faced by them, the HRCSL Chairperson, Dr. Deepika Udagama said.
The report is compiled based on round table discussions held by the HRCSL Head Office in Colombo and also by the Commission’s ten Regional Offices on International Women’s Day 2017 on the above theme. The discussions brought together women engaged in various forms of economic activities in the informal sector, government authorities, civil society and donors.
The launch would present an opportunity for participants to discuss the implementation of recommendations made by the Commission to public authorities in the report to address common issues elicited during the discussions, the HRCSL said. Media is invited to participate in the discussion.
The event will take place at the Auditorium of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), BMICH, Colombo 07 on Thursday 08 March 2018 from 09:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
