SL Embassy in Beijing brings computer donation program to Sri Lanka funded by Hong Kong

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing with the cooperation of the University Grant Commission in Sri Lanka donated 50 Lenovo computers to a group of university students who had shown academic performance in GCE A/L under the ‘One Laptop One Dream’ program conducted by the South-South Education Foundation (SSEF) based in Hong Kong. 

The donation ceremony was held on 13 September at the Auditorium of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka with the participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Thilak Marapana and Minister of Higher Education Lakshman Kiriella. South-South Education Foundation Deputy Director General Jenny Zhen Yao attended the ceremony representing Hong Kong.

This donation was arranged to stimulate the signed Memorandum of Understanding on ‘One Laptop One Dream’ computer donation on 12 December 2016 in Hong Kong by Dr. Zhong WU, Vice President and Director General of South-South Education Foundation (SSEF) and Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Beijing.

The name of R.M. Saumya Udeshika, who was able to enter university from Kotamuduna Maha Vidyalaya, Monaragala after her story was highlighted by the media, was also included in the list of students receiving computers.

South-South Education Foundation (SSEF) is a public education charity foundation with the purpose of contributing to the sustainable development through education, and cultural exchange. The Embassy is in the process of establishing contacts with the funding organisations to uplift the education sector of Sri Lanka.
