The Supreme Court yesterday directed the Commissioner General of Prisons to produce Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake in Court on 29 May.

A bench comprising Justices Sisira J. De Abrew, Vijith K. Malalgoda and P. Padman Surasena deferred for 29 May the charge of Contempt of Court against Ramanayake. Ramanayake has pleaded not guilty to these accusations.

The Attorney General on 30 July provided the draft rule against Ramanayake complaining that he was guilty of Contempt of Court.

The Court on 18 June directed the Attorney General to present the draft rule against Ramanayake to show cause as to why he should be charged in relation to two petitions filed against him for Contempt of Court.

President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran, with Jerusha Crossette Thambiah, appeared for Ramanayake.
