Rear Admiral Ruwan Perera has been appointed as the Navy Chief of Staff by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and received his letter of appointment from Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne at the Navy Headquarters.
Perera had been serving as the Navy Deputy Chief of Staff prior to promotion on 21 March.
He has served in the Navy for 35 years having joined the Navy in 1986 as an Officer Cadet of 14th intake in the Executive branch. Perera is a distinguished alumnus of the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington, India. He holds a master’s degree and has completed the National Defence Course at National Defense University, Beijing, China.
Rear Admiral Perera has been awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) and Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) among others for his service in the line of duty.
He has also served as Senior Staff Officer (Weapon), Deputy Director (Weapon), Director (Weapon) and Naval Inspectorate, Director Naval Training, Director Commercial Explosive, Fire Arms and Ammunitions Procurement Unit, and Director Projects and Plans.
Perera has commanded a number of Sri Lanka Navy regiments over the years, and held a number of commands ashore, including appointments at Navy Headquarters.
