The Puravesi Athvela and Grama Shakthi initiatives are comprehensive national programs out for the betterment of the country, President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.
The President made these remarks speaking at a meeting of divisional communicators of the Puravesi Athvela program held at the BMICH in Colombo yesterday.
The Puravesi Athvela program, carried out under a concept of President Sirisena covers all districts in the country, aims to provide solutions to issues faced by the people and grant them welfare while providing similar benefits at the grassroots level for people selected from each Grama Niladhari division.
The divisional communicators representing all Divisional Secretariats were present at the event.
These communicators will coordinate the relevant communicative work of the main national programs carried out on the direct advice of President Sirisena.
The President further said that the country needs people that can rise to the challenge of developing the country, adding that the Puravesi Athvela program was implemented for the betterment of today’s society as well as the future generation. He also urged participants to assist the Government in this regard, setting aside political and ethno-religious differences.
“While we were boasting about our history as a great nation of industry and technology, countries that don’t have such an inheritance have developed far more than we have,” he said. Sirisena added that Puravesi Athvela has been implemented as a program to unite suitable plans and suitable people to bring back that former glory.
Ministers Mahinda Mahinda Amaraweera, Dayasiri Jayasekara, State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Dilan Perera, Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, MP Malith Jayathilaka, Chief Advisor to the Puravesi Athvela Program Shiral Lakthilaka and the Additional Secretary to the President Jayantha Wijeyrathne also took part in the event.
