Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday called on Government MPs from Colombo District to intervene on behalf of nearly 200 people who lost their houses due to a recent fire.
The fire destroyed many homes in Kajimawatte, Mahawatte, Colombo North last week. Many of them wooden shacks, leaving 170-200 persons homeless.
Premadasa called on Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to intervene in the matter and provide apartments in public housing schemes for those affected.
“I ask that you to take leadership in this matter as you are a senior MP and represent Colombo District. We have been told the officers from the Urban Development Authority visited the location and told these venerable people that they won’t get housing and to rebuild wooden shacks on the same land. I bring this to your attention, please help these people,” Premadasa urged.
The Ministry of Justice took action to provide relief and advice to the residents of Kajimawatte following the blaze.
