A protest calling for justice for Thoothukudi will be held today at 3.00 p.m. in front of the High Commission of India.
Sri Lankans will protest in solidarity with the people of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu who were massacred for protesting against a toxic copper plant.
Over 10 people in Thoothukudi were massacred on 22 May for protesting against Vedanta subsidiary: Sterlite Industries. While the Tamil Nadu Government has ordered the closure of the toxic Sterlite copper plant, the company leaves in its wake a trail of bodies and two decades worth of environmental degradation.
The organisers said that from Rathupaswala to Thoothukudi, they believed a clean environment was a human right that must be prioritised over profit. They added that the people of Sri Lanka stood with Thoothukudi against the corporate terror of Vedanta and the Modi Government.
