Prof. Munasinghe & President Obama share limelight at Global Climate Leadership Summit

The co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace, Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, was the first among a panel of eminent speakers, which included former US president Barack Obama, also a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, to address the global Climate Change Leadership Summit in Porto, Portugal on 6 July.

Prof. Munasinghe spoke to a packed auditorium of 3,500 top level business leaders and CEOs on the role of business in addressing climate change and sustainability issues.

Besides Prof. Munasinghe and President Obama, the other main speaker at the summit was Dr. Irina Bokova, the first female and Eastern European Director-General of UNESCO. The Climate Change Leadership Summit helped launch the Porto Protocol, which features a solemn pledge by the world business community to urgently implement an action plan to fight climate change. 

Prof. Munasinghe is Chairman of the MIND Group in Colombo, which includes the non-profit Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), a UN recognised centre of excellence working globally on all aspects of sustainable development, and MIND Analytics and Management (MINDAM) focusing on data analytics and management consulting. 

He is Chairman of the President’s Exert Committee on Sustainable Sri Lanka 2030 Vision and a Distinguished Guest Professor at Peking University, China. He also serves as Director on the Board of Carbon Consulting Company (CCC), one of South Asia’s leading providers of Integrated Sustainability Solutions, adding sustainability to corporate boardroom agendas and is supported by MTI Consulting.
