Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena called on the United Nations to declare a Humanity Day under the UN calendar.
Speaking at the International Convention of Peacemakers for Universal Harmony held in Colombo at the Sri Lanka Foundation, he urged the participants to examine his proposal and take up following action as the rapid deterioration of human values is a very dangerous threat to mankind.
A declaration of a Humanity Day will emphasise the imperative need for promoting human values to the global community, especially to the world leaders, he said.
“I urge the distinguished delegates to deliberate the important issue of peacemaking and harmony and come up with ideas and suggestions as well as possible ways and means of disseminating this concept to the world at large,” the Prime Minister said.
International Convention of Peacemakers for Universal Harmony has been jointly organised by Maharshi Arvind Foundation and Ethnic Science Foundation in Colombo from 12 to 16 December.
Prime Minister Gunawardena pointed out that people get caught in a vicious cycle of violence and conflicts because of either ignorance or indifference to humanity and human values. “It is time we brought this truth most forcefully to the conflict-ridden world,” he said.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera, Western Province Governor Roshan Goonatilake, and Convener of the Convention, President’s Counsel Sarath Kongahage were also present on this occasion.
