The new Diya Man Bridge, constructed in parallel with the Gini Petti Bridge in Polonnaruwa, was inspected by President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday.
This bridge, situated in Wijayabhahupura in Polonnaruwa, crosses over a canal which supplies water for paddy cultivation from the Parakarama Samudraya.
As a long-term step taken under the ‘Pibidemu Polonnaruwa’ program, this bridge cost Rs. 250 million to build.
The construction of the bridge started in late September under the patronage of the President.
The President, who observed the site today, instructed the engineers to make the construction more efficient and to provide its immediate benefits to the farmer community.
The President then went to the Polonnaruwa, Nissankamallapura Sri Wijeyarama Vihara to meet the Shastrapathi Kanthale Rahula Himi, Ven. Kobeithuduwe Vijitha Himi and the Mahasangha and engaged in a friendly conversation.
The initial construction of the Vihara is currently being carried out under the President’s watch.
