Presidential Secretariat Director (Research & International Media) Sugeeswara Senadhira in a statement reiterated that the Polythene ban is effective from 1 September.
In a statement Senadhira said: I refer to the news item under the heading, “No legal action on polythene ban till Jan 2018” published in your newspaper of August 23, 2017 and the webnews item on August 25, 2017.
The Central Environmental Authority informs there in no change in the decision taken by the Cabinet on July 11, 2017 to ban polythene lunch sheets, styroform lunch boxes and HDPE products with effect from July 11, 2017.

Daily FT carried the article stating that the polythene ban will be effective from September 01. The paper also reported Cabinet co-spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne’s statement at the weekly cabinet briefing that no legal action will be taken on violators till 01 January.
