President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday joined other world leaders in condemning a terrorist attack in Spain that left at least a dozen people dead.
The full text of his message is as follows:
I am deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks in Spain on 17 August that resulted in the death and injury of so many innocent people.
The Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in offering sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones as a result of the heinous attacks. We hold the people of Spain close in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time, and wish those injured a swift recovery. My Government condemns these outrageous attacks in Spain in the strongest terms. Each and every terrorist attack that takes place anywhere in the world reminds us of the urgency to renew our commitment to unite and stand firmly in support of denouncing hatred and violence, and protecting the freedom and openness of our democratic societies.
We in Sri Lanka remain firm in our resolve to work with the international community to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, thus enhancing the safety and security of our societies.
Please accept, Your Majesty, the assurances of my highest consideration.
