President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to Divisional Secretaries to continue the services rendered by provincial councils to the public, even though the official terms of these provincial councils had ended.

The President gave these instructions at a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday to discuss the future activities of provincial councils whose terms had expired.

The President spoke to the officials about the issues they faced when fulfilling the duties of the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provincial councils, whose official terms have already ended.

The President also pointed out the need to ensure that other institutions did not control the responsibilities vested with provincial councils, and instructed officials regarding the ways in which they should effectively utilise the funds allocated to provincial councils.

President Sirisena further instructed the officials to pay special attention to development projects carried out in respective areas with local and foreign funds, and said to efficiently carry forward those projects. He advised them to carry out those activities under the guidance of the respective Governor of the Province.

A group, including Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faiszer Musthapha, governors and the Secretary to the President, Austin Fernando, participated in this meeting.
