Sri Lanka’s public transport system is expected to get a much-awaited boost with Cabinet approval given to issue an online prepaid transit card to passengers.
Cabinet approved a proposal by Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge to implement a plan submitted by Lanka Clear (Pvt.) Ltd., a 100% local company affiliated with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
“The Government feels this would be a timely endeavour given that there have been many complaints about cash usage on public transport. COVID-19 has also made handling cash more difficult and the Government feels this would be beneficial for all stakeholders,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman Udaya Gammanpila told reporters at the weekly briefing.
The Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to a proposal submitted by the Transport Minister to take necessary measures to utilise the online prepaid transit card for the public transport system.
