The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) yesterday seized 225.9 kg of heroin which were concealed in rice packs from a property in Ragama.
According to the Police four suspects and two vehicles were taken into custody in the raid. The suspects aged 24, 30, 50 and 55 are residents of Ragama, Welisara and Homagama. The suspects were produced before Colombo Magistrate Court and will likely be held on detention orders, Police said.
Acting on intelligence received, the PNB had dispatched a team of officers to apprehend a group of narcotics traffickers on 14 May. The PNB officers managed to arrest the four suspects at a residence on Nugagahawatta Road, Welisara, Ragama, and found the heroin packages concealed in rice packs which were loaded onto two vehicles, the Police said.
One Toyota Axio car and a Mahindra cab, in which the heroin was concealed, were also taken into custody by the PNB. Police sources suspect that the heroin was prepared to be moved by the suspects on orders received by a drug kingpin, who is currently in prison.
