The Police Department will take necessary steps to extradite a suspect arrested in India by Interpol.
According to Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, Interpol has informed local authorities that Mohamed Mahir Mohamed Nawaz, a suspect wanted in relation to an attack on a group of Police Narcotic Bureau officers in 2017 in Piliyandala that left an 11-year-old bystander and a Police Constable dead, has been arrested.
The incident also left then PNB Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa, another police constable with serious injuries.
“We are going to take necessary action to extradite the suspect to Sri Lanka by following the protocols of the extradition procedures,” DIG Rohana said.
The suspect has been detained by the Madurai Narcotic Bureau in India, DIG Rohana said adding that the department is taking necessary measures to extradite the suspect to face Court. The Police believes that the suspect escaped to India in an attempt to avoid being arrested.
