Police recover cache of weapons in Jaffna

The Jaffna police say early yesterday they have recovered a cache of weapons including firearms and explosives packed in a fertilizer bag and dumped by the roadside on the Jaffna- Vaddukoddai Road.

A pedestrian passing by has observed the suspicious package and alerted the police, the police said. Among the weapons recovered were 10 T-56 weap0ns, 5 magazines for those firearms, 300 live rounds of ammunition. The police also found 60 mm mortar, 2 smoke bombs and two hand grenades. The police believe the people who found the weapons cache from somewhere else and dumped in the drain to avoid detection. The discovery comes on the eve of the birth anniversary commemorations of vanquished LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhkaran which falls on November 26 and 27.
