The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) will present a draft of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution in Parliament next month.
“The party will include a proposal to make it illegal for a dual citizenship holder to take up tasks related to governing the country,” PHU Leader and MP Udaya Gammanpila told journalists yesterday.
He claimed that the Minister Basil Rajapaksa was able to enter the country’s administration not because he was appointed as the Finance Minister, but because he was the Leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) through the 20th Amendment.
MP Gammanpila said it was necessary to fill the gaps that were missed when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, adding that PHU will propose the enactment of a 22nd Amendment as a solution to the country’s issues.
He also said through the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution no dual citizens will be able to hold any State responsibility — may it be a MP, foreign mission and other State appointments including the judicial sector as well.
