Former Minister and MP Patali Champika Ranawaka has been elected uncontested as the Chairman of the Economic Stabilisation Sub-Committee appointed under the National Council to identify short- and medium-term programs related to economic stabilisation.
The aim of the Sub-Committee is to introduce an economic stabilisation program in Sri Lanka within a month.
MP Ranawaka was proposed by MP Vajira Abeywardena and the motion was seconded by MPs Naseer Ahmed and Mano Ganesan.
The Committee members expressed their views on the measures that can be taken for future economic security of the country, such as developing tea cultivation, increasing milk production, restructuring agriculture, fertiliser production, tourism industry, etc.
The members also agreed to discuss with experts in various fields and submit a report to the National Council on 20 October, proposals related to economic development in each field.
Accordingly, the members agreed to call experts on foreign exchange issues, debt restructuring, as well as officials from the Central Bank and the Finance Ministry before the Committee on 13 October to obtain their views.
