“Voters had the opportunity to go to the polling centres and cast their vote without any fear or suspicions,” he said. According to Wickremesinghe, this was possible due to a lack of political influence over any officials, including the Election Commission, which in turn allowed them to successfully carry out their duties. He also insisted that this was enabled due to the passage of the 19th Amendment.
In the statement, he thanked all those who worked hard to ensure a free and fair election from the inception to the very end of it, including the Election Commission and its staff of public officers, as well as the Police and armed forces.
“We hope the independent commission established by us is protected in the future,” Wickremesinghe said, while also extending his gratitude on behalf of the UNP-led United National Front (UNF) to all those who voted for the New Democratic Front (NDF) candidate Sajith Premadasa.
