Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ceremoniously released water to the main tunnel of the Broadlands Hydropower Project virtually from Temple Trees.
The key objective of the project is to harness the hydro potential downstream of the existing Polpitiya Power Station by carrying water through the 3.5 km tunnel. It will have an installed capacity of 35 MW, and is expected to generate 126 GWh of electricity annually.
The main sites of the project are located near Kitulgala. The estimated cost of the project is $ 97 million.
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, together with People’s Bank and Hatton National Bank of Sri Lanka, have funded the project. Power Minister Gamini Lokuge, Justice Minister Ali Sabry, State Ministers Duminda Dissanayake and Sendil Thondaman and officials were also present at the occasion.
