Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday sent a congratulatory note to US President Donald Trump on the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. In the letter, Wickremesinghe praised Trump and US Special Forces for the killing, which was reported to have taken place on Sunday.
“I am confident this will considerably weaken ISIS and make the world a more secure place. For a country that suffered for over thirty years fighting on of the world’s most ruthless terrorist organisations, we are well aware of the devastating effects that the scourge of terrorism brings on democracy and civilian way of life,” the letter said.
Wickremesinghe hailed the death of the ISIS leader and recalled the support given to Sri Lanka by the US to combat its own terror organization.
“I recall with gratitude the US’s assistance in defeating terrorism in Sri Lanka, especially the US Government’s vigilance and legal measures in denting the LTTE’s international fund raising and arms procurement network and helping with the humanitarian challenges, which are most appreciated by the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.”
