The Parliamentary Council (PC) yesterday confirmed several judicial appointments, including the appointment of a new Supreme Court judge.
The PC confirmed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s nominee Arjuna Obeyesekere, President of the Court of Appeal as a Judge of the Supreme Court to fill the post which became vacant following the retirement of Justice Sisira J. de Abrew.
Appeal Court Judge K.P. Fernando was named President of the Court of Appeal to fill the vacancy created by Obeyesekere’s elevation to the Supreme Court.
The PC also agreed to appoint High Court Judge Sasi Mahendran as a Judge of the Court of Appeal to fill the vacancy created by K.P. Fernando’s appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal.
The PC also agreed to appoint Supreme Court Judge L.T.B Dehideniya as a member of the Judicial Service Commission which became vacant on the retirement of Justice De Abrew.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda and MP Hashim attended the PC meeting yesterday.
