The Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) Colombo yesterday gave permission for the trouble crude oil tanker MT New Diamond to be towed to a safe destination away from Sri Lankan waters, the Navy said.
The Daily FT learned that permission was granted to tow the stricken super-tanker after the owner promised to settle two interim claims lodged by the Sri Lankan Government.
Two SL Navy vessels will escort the troubled tanker to a distance of 200 nautical miles which is where the Exclusive Economic Zone ends. The tanker is being towed by several tugs at a slow speed. The Indian Coast Guard is expected to take over escort control beyond Sri Lankan waters. (AF)
