Over 2,000 police officers will be deployed in the city of Colombo for public safety and traffic control during the festive season, the Police Headquarters said.
Both officers in uniforms and civvies will be deployed for official duties. Officers in civvies will keep an eye out for pickpockets and those engaged in other frauds and will take action against them.
The IGP had directed them to pay special attention to ease traffic congestion in Colombo City and the suburbs, Police headquarters said.
The IGP has given instructions to provide security at a level according to the relevant police divisions with regard to the cities in the outskirts of Colombo.
The Police Headquarters said the traffic police had been instructed to be on the lookout for drunken drivers and to arrest them to minimise accidents caused by drunk driving.
The police have also requested the public to be more careful when lighting fireworks and to use standard fireworks as well as prevent small children from standing near fireworks.
