A National People’s Power (NPP) meeting held in the Weerambugedara divisional secretariat in Polgahawela came under attack on Tuesday night by an unidentified group. The meeting had been organised to set up the party’s Panagamuwa division council and was well underway when the incident took place.
Three NPP supporters including Pradeshiya Sabha Councillor Somaratne Edirisinghe suffered injuries at the hands of the groups and were hospitalised for treatment.
The group had also damaged a parked vehicle and a shop near the meeting location before fleeing the spot.
The assailants had arrived and began to attack those gathered in the presence of Chief Guest Kurunegala District Secretary of the NPP Marine Engineer H.M.P. Ratnayake, the Chief Incumbent of the area temple, businessmen and other area residents. Weerambugedara Police are carrying out further investigations into the incident.
