UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake on 6 February emphasized the need to establish a new political culture while noting that the efforts of the Yahapalanaya Government were beginning to yield positive results, particularly in the tackling corruption.

“I whole heartedly agree with the sentiments expressed by President Sirisena during his Independence Day speech. The fight against corruption is the self defence of a nation. Indeed, strengthening the attitude toward anti-corruption and implementing anti-corruption policies will ensure that the nation will progress,” he said.

The backbencher MP made these remarks while taking part in yesterday’s special parliamentary debate on the Bond and PRECIFAC reports.

He urged the House to ensure good governance is continued without further corruption so the nation may develop without hindrance.

“Today, those who don’t even know how many zeros are there in a million or billion are talking about the losses in the bond issue. The bond issue is not just an issue of the previous government or this one and corruption has become a culture in this country. It is regretful that this problem is hampering the progress of the country and impeding its development,” Karunanayake said.

He then went on to remark on how the Bond scam had affected him as an MP and an individual.

“During the recent past there were elements who were trying to portray me as the biggest sinner and culprit. This sinister move is still taking place. But no matter how much mudslinging or humiliation I am made to undergo, I can still be content with the fact that the efforts we made to establish good governance in this country is bearing fruit,” he said.
