The Cabinet of Ministers has cleared the implementation of multipurpose projects under public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the lands allocated for the Department of Posts to generate additional income.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday.
“The Department of Post consists of a network of 654 main post offices and 3,410 sub-post offices. Of the 654 main post offices, 154 post offices are operated in private buildings on lease,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Mass Media Minister said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
He also said that despite the fact that plots of land have been allocated in several provinces for the construction of post offices, those proposed construction of buildings has not taken place due to lack of sufficient funds.
Annually, Rs. 400 million is spent on the Postal Department and the Minister said the new move will help boost revenue.
