The Attorney of Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha, alias ‘Makandure Madush,’ wrote to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) this week, calling on the organisation to condemn the custodial death of their client and to take up the matter with relevant authorities.
The letter, written on the advice of Madush’s wife, raises concerns about how the now deceased client was transferred to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) of the Police from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), where Madush was held on detention orders for questioning.
The letter calls the transfer of the suspect to the CCD from the CID ‘Illegal,’ adding that it was carried out ‘arbitrarily.’ The letter also informs the BASL that Madush’s wife wrote to the Director of the CCD expressing her concerns about an imminent threat to the suspect’s life. Madush’s lawyer, Attorney Chaminda Athukorale called the narrative given by the law enforcement agencies regarding his clients murder “a pure fabrication”.
The letter has also been copied to the Acting Inspector General of the Police and the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
