The five-member expert committee appointed to investigate the demolition of King Buwanekabahu’s court in Kurunegala yesterday recommended to take legal action against those involved in the incident and charge them with the expenses for building repair.
The expert committee yesterday handed over an interim report to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees. In the interim report the committee makes five recommendations.
The committee said as there was minimal damage the building should be reconstructed at the earliest as a measure to prevent it from further destruction. It also mentions that the Archaeology Department had a comprehensive record of the building and this could be utilised for the reconstruction process.
In the report, the committee recommended to place the building under the Archaeology Department as measures to protect it for future generations.
As the third recommendation, the committee called for the Road Development Authority (RDA) to revise the road development project to protect the building. The committee as the fourth and fifth points recommended to take legal action against those responsible for the demolition and charge them for its repair.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the committee following calls by several parties to investigate into the alleged demolition of the building. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) this week held a protest in Kurunegala demanding tough action be taken against those responsible for the incident.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) also pledged to take tough action based on the committee recommendations.
