Rural Roads and other Infrastructure State Minister Nimal Lanza yesterday resigned from his Ministerial portfolio.

He said the letter of resignation has been directed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. However, he declined to comment on the reason behind his resignation.

Lanza joins as the fifth Minister to step down from the Government, after State Minister Susil Premajayanth, Former Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila and State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera also resigned in the recent past.

MP Lanza meanwhile handed over a detailed report to the President recently, over the controversy surrounding him and State Minister Sanath Nishantha and also spoke at length at Parliament on difficulties faced by the public given the economic crisis.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said he has not received a confirmation on the resignation of State Minister Nimal Lanza.

“I don’t know about his resignation on an official basis,” he said in response to a query from a journalist at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

Dr. Pathirana however implied that there had been an internal discussion with regards to the privileges of MPs.

“The tax-free permits were abandoned by our Government for all Parliamentarians. In addition, the pension of the MPs that used to get within five years was abandoned by the Budget 2022 and it was extended in line with all State workers for 10 years. We also discussed on the sacrifices that needs to be taken to face the economic woes,” he added.
