The Kataragama Sacred Area Development Project was launched this week on the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The cost of the project is Rs. 200 million and it is scheduled for completion in 2030.
All sacred areas will be developed under the ‘Vision of Prosperity’ policy statement. The Kataragama Sacred Area and Pilgrim Infrastructure will be developed under the project. It is proposed to develop the area under 19 projects.
A walking path will also be constructed under its second phase. The cost of the project is Rs. 120 million. Reconstruction work of Dutuwewa, which is believed to have been built during the reign of King Dutugemunu, is also underway.
This is the first time that the Dutuwewa has been renovated since it was last renovated in 1947. The Kataragama area is being developed as a green area and another objective of the program is to provide adequate rest and spiritual facilities to the pilgrims.
