The Korean International Corporation Agency (KOICA) has agreed to award a grant of $ 4 million, whilst the Government will provide $ 441,000 to implement a project for enhancing the training courses in the construction sector in selected technology institutes and technical colleges in Sri Lanka.

The objective is to provide advanced technological and professional education to cater to the requirements in the construction sector-related job market.

“There is an extensive gap in the skills that are supplied to the international market with those that are in demand. The majority of the migrants do not have the skill sets or qualifications that are in demand. This initiative will help the skill market entrants to enhance their employability and preparedness for their journey in search of decent work abroad,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Media Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said at the post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday.

He also said this is a great springboard to help skills, particularly in the construction sector, which can lead to improved employment opportunities, better wages, working conditions, and higher productivity.

It has been planned to improve the capacity of construction sector-related courses in the Maradana and Ratnapura Technology Colleges and the Ratmalana and Matara Technical Colleges.

To this effect, the proposal submitted by the Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers this week.

The project is expected to be implemented within the time frame of year 2021 to 2024, and will enter into an agreement with the KOICA for obtaining the relevant grant.
